Selank and Semax: What They Are and What the Research Shows

Selank and Semax are two short peptides that were developed in Russia and are used there as nasal sprays. Patients usually ask about them for stress, focus, and mental clarity. Here is what they are, what the research shows so far, and how we think about them.

What is Selank?

Selank is a lab-made version of tuftsin, a small peptide your immune system makes on its own. Researchers added a few amino acids to make it last longer in the body. In Russia it has been studied mainly for anxiety.

What is Semax?

Semax is a lab-made peptide based on a small piece of ACTH, a hormone your pituitary gland makes. It does not act like ACTH in the body. In Russia it has been used in stroke recovery and for some memory and attention problems.

What the research shows so far

  • Selank and anxiety. A few small human studies, mostly from Russia, suggest Selank may ease anxiety with little sedation. These studies were small, and large independent trials are still missing.

  • Semax and the brain. Animal studies show Semax may raise BDNF, a protein that supports nerve cells. Human studies are limited and mostly come from one country.

  • Focus and memory. Many people use these peptides for focus. There is very little high-quality human data on healthy adults.

Safety

Both peptides appear to be well tolerated in the studies we have, with nasal irritation as the most common complaint. Long-term safety data in the United States is limited. We are careful with anyone who has a seizure disorder, uncontrolled blood pressure, or takes medications that affect mood.

Before you try a peptide for stress or focus

Low energy, poor focus, and anxiety often have causes we can test for. Thyroid problems, low iron, low vitamin D, blood sugar swings, poor sleep, and shifting hormones in perimenopause are common ones. We look at those first.

Is Selank or Semax right for you?

We never start a peptide based on a trend. We look at your health history, current medications, labs, blood pressure, and goals first. Sometimes a peptide fits your plan. Often the bigger wins come from sleep, nutrition, strength training, and hormone balance, and we will tell you that.

This article is for education only and is not medical advice. Neither Selank nor Semax is FDA-approved. Rules for compounded peptides have changed several times in 2025 and 2026, so we only prescribe what can be legally prescribed and filled by a licensed pharmacy. Talk with your own provider before starting any peptide.
