Cagrilintide: How It Works and What the Research Shows
Cagrilintide is a long-acting version of amylin, a hormone your pancreas releases with insulin after you eat. It is being studied for weight loss, both alone and paired with semaglutide. Here is what we know so far.
What is cagrilintide?
Amylin helps you feel full, slows how fast your stomach empties, and lowers the rise in blood sugar after meals. Natural amylin breaks down within minutes. Cagrilintide was designed to last about a week, so it can be injected once weekly.
How it is different from GLP-1 medications
Semaglutide and tirzepatide act on GLP-1 receptors. Cagrilintide acts on amylin receptors. Because they work on different fullness signals, researchers are testing them together.
What the research shows so far
Cagrilintide alone. In a 26-week trial, people on the highest dose lost about 10% of their body weight on average, compared with about 3% on placebo.
Cagrilintide with semaglutide. In a large 68-week trial of the combination, people lost about 20% of their body weight on average.
These are averages from clinical trials. Results vary a lot from person to person.
Side effects
The most common side effects are nausea, constipation, and other stomach symptoms, similar to GLP-1 medications. Starting low and increasing slowly helps.
Approval status
Cagrilintide is not FDA-approved on its own. Novo Nordisk has asked the FDA to approve the cagrilintide and semaglutide combination, so ask us for the latest status at your visit.
Weight loss with your heart in mind
Before any weight loss medication, we check insulin, blood sugar, thyroid, lipids, and blood pressure. We also focus on protecting muscle with protein and strength training while you lose fat.
Is cagrilintide right for you?
We never start a peptide based on a trend. We look at your health history, current medications, labs, blood pressure, and goals first. Sometimes a peptide fits your plan. Often the bigger wins come from sleep, nutrition, strength training, and hormone balance, and we will tell you that.
