AOD-9604: An Honest Look at the Research
AOD-9604 is a peptide made from a small piece of human growth hormone. It was developed in the late 1990s as a possible fat loss drug. Patients often ask about it as a gentler alternative to weight loss medication, so here is an honest look.
What is AOD-9604?
AOD-9604 is a modified piece of the end of the growth hormone molecule. The goal was to keep growth hormone's effect on fat breakdown without its effects on blood sugar or growth.
What the research shows so far
Animal studies. In obese mice and rats, AOD-9604 increased fat breakdown and reduced fat gain.
Human weight loss trials. Early human trials looked hopeful. A larger trial did not show meaningful weight loss compared with placebo, and development as a weight loss drug stopped.
Joints and cartilage. Some early lab and animal research looked at cartilage repair. Human evidence here is very limited.
For weight loss, the GLP-1 medications we prescribe have far stronger evidence than AOD-9604.
Safety
In human studies, AOD-9604 was well tolerated and did not appear to raise blood sugar or IGF-1. Long-term safety data is limited.
When it might fit
We may discuss AOD-9604 as a small add-on for someone who is already doing the basics well. It is never a replacement for nutrition, strength training, sleep, or a proven medication when one is needed.
Is AOD-9604 right for you?
We never start a peptide based on a trend. We look at your health history, current medications, labs, blood pressure, and goals first. Sometimes a peptide fits your plan. Often the bigger wins come from sleep, nutrition, strength training, and hormone balance, and we will tell you that.
